This week is Adult Learners’ Week. We get to shine the spotlight on the achievements of people, projects and organisations across Wales championing and participating in a wide range of lifelong learning and skills.
We caught up with Finance Manager Bethan Jones who is over halfway to completing her ILM Level 5.
From Trainee Accountant to Finance Manager
I’ve been working at Protectorcomms – a security services specialist based in Caerphilly since 2017. I started as a Trainee Accountant, but I am now fully qualified. When I first started, it was just me, but the team has grown over time, and I now manage four staff. Halfway to completing ILM
Developing myself as well as my team
After leaving school I attended evening classes at college where I completed courses in shorthand and word processing. I then went on to complete NVQ’s in Business Admin.
Over the years I worked in insurance before going on to complete my AAT and ACCA to become a Charted Accountant. When it comes to qualifications, I have done a lot to do with accounting and finance, but never to do with managing and understanding a team. That’s when I started my ILM Level 5 with Educ8 Training.
I needed to get more of an insight into how I manage a team and how I can develop my staff. Understanding their different personalities as well as developing myself as a manager.
The first projected I completed provided an insight into myself as a manager. That helped me a lot in how I can manage other people.
I have enjoyed getting to know myself as a manager. Understanding what kind of a manager I am and the ways I can implement small changes to improve and develop my team.
Flexible assessments
My job role is very busy. Sometimes I work in the evenings to get things done. My assessor has been flexible with my assessment criteria. We have been able to record discussions around the subject area from the notes I have made, rather than having to do more writing. My assessor gives me bite-sized tasks where the work is broken down into small chunks. I feel this is more manageable and achievable.
I would recommend Educ8 Training as a work-based learning provider. The assessors are very knowledgeable and can adapt work to fit in with your preferred ways of learning and work life balance.
We’d like to wish Bethan the best of luck in completing the rest of her ILM. We’ll see her at Gradu8 in the future.
